Provenance labels
The labels Soil puts on load-bearing claims · Stated, Inferred, Unknown · plus the special case of Verified.
Every load-bearing claim in a handover carries a provenance label so you (and the loading model) know how much to trust it. See provenance for the why.
The user-facing labels

| Stated | Said directly in the conversation by the user or the model. | Solid ground. |
| Inferred | Reasonably deduced from context, but not stated outright. | Worth a quick check. |
| Unknown | Genuinely absent · marked as a gap, not invented. | A known gap to resolve. |
The special case: Verified
Verified is reserved for claims backed by real proof · repo, runtime, or tool evidence. A model asserting "this is done" is Stated, not Verified. Soil never promotes a self-report to a proof.
Mapping from the internal set
Internally the engine tracks a richer evidence set (repo-verified, observed, model-reported, user-confirmed, inferred, planned-only, blocked, …). That set always maps down to Stated / Inferred / Unknown before it reaches any user-facing surface · Soil never shows a confidence it didn't earn.
